Well, I know McDonald's does not do any good to sustainability, both economically and culturally. However, design-wise, its new cup holder design is kind of smart.

This extra thick paper on the cup saves the trouble of the external 'slip' we usually get from coffee shops, which keeps falling down (I first saw this kind of design in 2010 in Copenhagen, Denmark). Not just that, it even incorporates 'loyalty card' and the 'point' (which is the coffee bean sticker). Something to think about, eh?

Happy 2012, everyone. Thanks for supporting my blog for the past few years. I don't know where you are from, but I do appreciate your visits. :)

The first post of the year is gonna introduce a documentary made by four creatives from Taiwan. Of course, the name of the documentary is "Design & Thinking." They interviewed many heavyweights in the design and culture sector and collected their thoughts on this very topic. I am actually very happy that someone is managed to make this much discussed concept "design thinking" into a film.

The design firm IDEO popularized this term, mainly with the efforts of its founder and chairman, David Kelly, and its CEO and president, Tim Brown. Since then (around 2008/2009), the concept has greatly influenced not only the design industry, but also the business world and so on.

An interesting project (1994-present) done by photographer Ari Versluis and profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek. It showcases pictures of dress codes in different social groups in Rotterdam (starting from Rotterdam) and around the world.

It tackles such aspects as culture, identity, fashion and trends. Ethnographic fieldwork methods are important here. One will need to go on to streets to observe and understand both the wide culture in the society and subcultures.

Same concept with the Schiphol Airport, Virgin Airline also offers the whole experiences to the passengers.

When not yet boarded, one can't help but notice its bright red color, whether it is on its logo or on their flight attendants' uniform or on everything else. Yes, the red is for sure an important element of its brand. However, it doesn't just stop there. When onboard, one will be greeted with super friendly and energetic staff; they are so shiny that they can almost glow. The brand is not just the visuals but most importantly, the people.

The eye-catchy color, along with the friendly and helpful staff and the in-flight entertainment that offers the latest shows and movies, a complete and succesful identity has born.

Have you ever looked up to the sky when a airplane passes by? Have you ever looked at the plane and thought who is on it and what kind of life he or she is leading?

Yes and yes. I have.

I've always been amazed with people who can go back and forth between two places; at least they won't be choked with the fact that they have to be in One place for the rest of their lives.

The opportunity to study abroad allows me to fly back and forth between the States and Taiwan and therefore, I have left my traces in international airports in Taipei, New York, San Francisco, Detroit, Honolulu and Alaska, just to name a few.

Then, because of the visits to Europe, I had the chance to see European airports, including the world-class Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

Without much to do and waiting for time to tick is torturing for many passengers. Most all the airports have duty-free shops, restaurants and stores that sell pricey goods, but the Schiphol has added more selections close to people's daily life. Besides H&M, Hema and other standard-price shops, it even has a library, a museum, supermarkets and florists (there are actually much more amazing services for the passengers, but those mentioned above are the ones impressing me the most.) It is actually a miniature city that offers a range of facilities and services to fit people's needs.

Another thing that shows the airport's consideration to people is that it puts comfortable chairs around lounge areas for passengers to rest. Who would deny such a thing after a ten-hour flight?

Hew...I am back in Taiwan for a short vacation. Lots of traveling in past few months, so the blog has been on the "rest" mode for a while. It is the first post since May and I promise I will write more regularly.

One month ago, I was still in the relatively cold, quiet and "green" Copenhagen. Each place has its own uniqueness and each one of them is different. Though, Taiwan is always my home. Although I have away for two years, I don't feel one tiny bit of unfamiliarity with this place.

When immersing in the local cultures here, some thoughts come to my mind. This TV commercial has impressed me the most so far. It is for a job-hunting website, which encourages young job-hunters not to fear the challenges ahead of them. Its storytelling is emotional. The audience doesn't even need to read Chinese to get the message behind this commercial. The shots of the footage communicate its ideal very well. The nervous look and the uncertain steps of the actor; the comparison and contrast of the old and present; and, the background English song are all very universal and human. It is truly a successful ad that is related to people.

I love the idea of free bikes for citizens to use in a city.

(In Paris. Barcelona and Copenhagen also have it)

The bookstore, popularized by the movie Before Sunset, is now a must-visit spot in Paris. However, it has served as a place for English-Language writers to gather for long time ago, such as Hemingway. It has an old school independent bookstore charm; no wonder many people want to stop by.

On the day I visited, It was very crowded, and I didn't have a chance to browse all the books. But, it is FULL OF BOOKS. I did see one book published by the New York Times (?), Julia Child's cook book, and many poem books (a lot of them are handmade). The people who work there seem to be Americans (I guess they are writers from the States). It was originally open by an American from New Jersey, Sylvia Beach, in 1919. For more info, here.

A pig leg is usually displayed in restaurants or tapas.

Spanish dessert- churro with chocolate;
Local Spanish Café- Cortado (Espresso with a drop of milk)

Macaron. Colorful, cute circle shaped dessert. Loved by children and ladies around the world. Sophia Coopla's Marie Antoinette probably promotes its relation with France. It is treated as high-end dessert with sophisticated package. Donuts, similar in the round shape and the variety of flavors and colors, on the other hand, are more accessible.


Paella-Spanish rice with seafood or meat or vegetable. Origin from Valencia in Spain.

Tapas- Spanish small dishes, with components of vegetable, seafood, sausage and etc.
Good with beer and foodball game on TV.

I have been asking myself which place I will be missing the most after I leave New York.

At first, I was shocked that I didn't feel too much about it. Don't get me wrong, though. It is a wonderful city; there are just too many things to do and I can't pick the one I like the most.

About one month ago, I suddenly got the first answer, which is the coffee shop close to my place. I have been going there almost every morning in the past one year. It is the place I step in before I do serious businesses; it is the place I can go to when I want to escape; and it is the place that soothes me with a cup of well-made mocha.

Then, recently, I got my final answer; it should be the room I currently stay at. It is not fancy, but it accompanies me to go through the lowest of my life. No matter how bad the day was or how bad the weather was, as soon as I got to my room, I could have a piece of peace and calm myself down for the next challenge. Also, I can always find the positive energies from my roommates, which give me the courage of life.

It is short, but for sure it will be ever-lasting. I will definitely miss the space I have in New York and it will always have a significant place in my mind.

Digital media preveils in our scoeity. Websites, iPad, smart phones and more change the way we read and interact with information. However, thinkers like Tyler Brule and Bill Moggridge still value the importance of prints.

Brule said in the New York Magazine that his Monocole editors would just smell and touch different stocks when the new issues arrive at their office.

Moggridge said in fast co design blog that people still purchase magazines and books is because of the paper, the glossy images and anyting physical that allow them to feel and appreciate. The online media, on the other hand, said Moggridge, provide people the easy access to information and motivate people to actually buy the physical thing. He is also optimistic about the dynamic between print and digital media nowadays.

Speaking of dynamics, Michel Gondry, an important figure in film, talks about his new film in the New York Magazine. He compares the two actors in the film. "Seth like to improvise a lot, and he's very confident with the verb. Jay, he barely speaks English, but he would compensate with his coolness all the time...I thought this dymanics is exactly what was at core of their relationship.

"Calling" is a simple word that we learned long time ago when we were young. However, I don't really understand it until this year.

Three years ago when I was at the boot camp of Parsons' Design and Technology Master's program, someone named Kyle mentioned this word again. He said this program does a lot with technology rather than simply design; If you want to do the opposite, maybe it is your call.

Of course, I didn't stay. I am the kind of person who is very true to myself. I transferred to Pratt, where I could do a lot of graphic design. I just thought I would follow my interest.

Now, I have graduated and have gone through the terrible time of looking for a job and figuring out myself. As much as I love design, I realize that I am more passionate for contributing my knowledge through the way of writing. Writing makes me happy and helps me think. I enjoy writing for myself, but at the same time, I also have the ability to write for others.

And suddenly, I hear the "calling." It is the voice from your heart that notifies you. After so many trials and errors, it has finally come. I choose to follow you, and I hope I am right.

My life is full of traveling. I guess it is destiny.

A recent trip to Denmark and daily trip to work located in Long Island both make me wonder about the occupation of ticket checker.

The metro in Copenhagen and the Long Island Rail Road both are outdoor. There isn't any gates or anything. People with or without tickets can go on to the platform. Maybe it is why checkers are needed. And, I do find the occupation "romantic". It kind of reminds me of the old days when cars weren't popular and train was the main transportation. (just like Kate Winslet's role in the film, The Reader.)

I was just thinking- it is contrasting in the modern society with advanced digital technology. One may argue that it symbolizes the trust of humanity to not have any setup in front of the entrance of the train. However, which way is cheaper? To keep the checkers or to set up a device that can last for a long time and can detect if a passenger pays for the ticket?

I hope one day my question will be answered. If not, it is fine. I rather enjoy having them.

Other thoughts of my own -

The morning of New York - although it is annoying to wake up at 7 o'clock in the morning, it is refreshing to be able to be part of the workforce, who takes subway to work. I like to see how people dress and what people do on the subway. I take G train, which passes by many hip stops, like Metropolitan Ave. (Williamsburg area), Greenpoint Ave. and Long Island City where PS1 Museum is located. These places are full of creative energies and it is really fun to see how people dress - shoes, scarf, bag, hair, and etc. It is also fun to see how we learn to share limited space with others; how we learn to do our own things without being afraid of the public eyes.

Decorations or nice elements for the households are essential for the quality of life. They are not just nice to look at. Through different kinds of illustrations, typography, print-making techniques and so on, they tell a story and history.

John Derian, a big name in home decorations, says one of his favorites trays is "taken from a late-19th-century German print."“It’s so conceptual,” he said, “as if you’re putting your things down in a room.”

Loving my neighborhood!

The reason I have been staying in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn for two years is because of the brownstones and the stoops. The landscape is so beautiful. I feel like I am immersing in the history. The appearance of a neighborhood is so important to your well-being. There are many "third places" like coffee shops to provide you a space between work and home. I am so glad I am here compared to people who have to live in an empty landscape that has nothing that promotes the sense of community.

The stoops are amazing and magic. It gives you a space to hang out with your neighbors, your friends, or even people who walk past by you. A sunny saturday afternoon hanging out with local people on stoops are the best! You don't need to make any efforts to plan anything to invite anyone from far away. It just happens naturally because we all live in the same area. It's the most comfortable and enjoyable thing for me now. I am lucky I find someone to share this with me. Let's keep it coming!

1. Y.E. - a japanese girl who studied graphic design in australia. i met her at parsons' dt boot camp. her passion and determination for design really move me. although under much stress, she can still keep her smile and her cool.

2. G.B. - a designer who cares about people. he is social, but he doesn't make you feel he not sincere.

3. Patti Smith - she is the last because I didn't met her until my graduation. she was one of the speakers. she gave the most touching speech. Below is the summary.
3.1. take care of your teeth
3.2. build your name. your name will serve you.
3.3 be happy
3.4 your are not alone. you have friends, family and ancestors. choose the one you wish and she or he will walk with you.

I won't know this building if not for Brooklyn Flea Market. People have told me about this building of the old bank-Williamsburgh Savings Bank. So, it's time to give it a visit before the market moves outdoor in two weeks.

Built in 1927, the interior is amazing: mosaics on the vault, Romanesque columns, metal works on the catholic church-like windows, engraved details on columns, and etc. The exterior also displays animal engravings and metal works.

The spirit of paying attention to details really let me respect to people of the old time. And I feel very lucky to be in this city where there are so many beautiful historical buildings.

Finally, I went to the "Slash: Paper Under the Knife" exhibition (Materials and Process series- Paper) in Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). There have been so many people who recommended me this exhibition since last year. I guess a lot of designers really appreciate the traditional method of paper cutting in the modern digital world.

My favorite piece (the one that amazes me the most) is a series of little stage-like art works (i don't remember how many there are. I guess about 15-20 of them ) by Andrea Dezsö. The layers in each one give the depth/dimension to the work, overcoming the 2D of paper. The illustrations are dark but intriguing and with a lot of details. It's like reading a book when going from one to another. I think there are certain meaning with the position (what is on the top, bottom, right, left); unfortunately, I don't really know.

When the famous fashion designer, Alexander Mcqueen, past away a month ago, I saw a lot of people had "R.I.P. Alexander Mcqueen....." on their facebook or twitter status. Yeah, it was a big news. And, because of the news, I went onto his official website and saw his fashion style. It is very bold, edgy, graphic and everything. I can understand why he has so many fans.

Though, is it enough to say "I am so sad, blah blah blah..." on your status? Do you just want to catch the flow and being updated? Or, do you really say it from the bottom of your heart?

A lot of people shop his brand because they are able to financially. Though, I thought "fashion" is higher than that. Maybe it combines art and has a message.

Interesting items found on the website of Copper Hewitt Museum and its shop.

The first one is designed by Ross Menuez, who won the National Design Awards in product category last year. It is a very awesome perspective.

I first saw the "vase" in Chelsea Market. It was just outside of "Chelsea Thai". How nice that we can see such a nice design in a such an everyday environment.

The mini Arco lamp was so fun and smart. Not every one can afford a real one. A tiny one is not bad.
This also makes me go back to the history of the lamp. It was designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1960s.

The most impressive piece from the Bauhaus exhibition at MoMA.

A presentation that pays attention to details from head to toe.

The design of the chair is smart. The use of the model completes the presentation even more.

The use of the mask, according to MoMA, says about the Bauhaus. "Smooth and silent; hide national and individual identity; geometric forms that reject the tradition back then."

Although it has got bad reviews, being said it is not the real New Yorks' life, I still watched this movie.

Maybe for many people this film doesn't not necessarily talking about New York, but people will only watch movie because of this context.

The diverse ethnicity, the American dream, the difference between upper-lower class and young-old generation in New York are pretty true for me.

The one I like the most is the old couple walk to Coney Island. That one is close to life and touching.

Objectified

I went to watch Gary Hustwit's "objectified" at the same place as I watched his "Helvetica"- at Pratt Brooklyn.

People nowadays are obsessed with products, like iPhone, iPod, and beautifully designed chair. After watching the interviews with some famous characters in the design field, such as Jonathan Ives at Apple and David Kelley from IDEO, we can get the insights about industrial/interaction design.

In order to design a successful product, designers need to be the "philosopher" and think how the product can be most functional and practical to human's life, not to mention about the sleek appearance.

There is one designer who is interviewed says that designers should think about what's gonna be in the future. What's happening now is already history. This echos a video of Paul Smith for Evian.

I think the most valuable part of this movie is that the director went to so many countries, such as Japan and France, to bring back precious thoughts from these important designers.

Recently, I got a pair of moccasin from Minnetonka, which reminds me the real moccasins that I saw during my New Mexico trip this time.

Moccasins were the shoes for Indians. They are sewn from tanned leather. Each tribe have different patterns.

Design Week in Northern Europe

Just found out two Design Week in Helsinki, Finland (Sept. 4-13) and Copenhagen, Denmark (Aug 27-Sept.6).

The Northern European countries, including Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, have become the hot place for design recently- signage, architecture, industrial for example.

The mysterious and adventouous New Mexico

I just came back from an adventurous trip in America's southwest-New Mexico. There are few things that amazed me during this trip. The open landscape, the Indian Pueblos and some interesting small towns.

There are 19 Pueblos now existing in New Mexico. I visited the Taos and Acoma Pueblo. I was lucky to visit the original site of the Taos Pueblo (around 12-15 century) - the adobe house, the outdoor oven, the stairs, the mountain, the river and etc. Turquoise is abundant there, so the colors of the adobe houses are always the brown- and red-ish with turquoise.

On the other hand, I didn't get to see the original site of Acoma Pueblo. But, I did see the "mesa" where old Indians lived. When I imagine how they lived in the 12 century, it gets very magnificent.

When in Taos, I stayed in the Indian tent, which is called "tipi". It got pretty cold at night and I needed about 3-4 blankets. There were also some little bugs at night, which scared me a little. But overall, it was a nice experience.

Because of the name, Truth or Consequences, I went to that little town. The town was called "Hot Spring" because it is what it's famous for. However, in 1950s, a radio show called Truth or Consequences announced that it would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Lots of town across America applied for it, but it is this unique town that got it. It is just a quiet town. No too many people were there. Just like a movie set for me. There is one old-fashioned movie theater and some historical buildings.

I have the sense of success because I really visited New Mexico. You don't have that many chances to be determined to do so in the lifetime.

Sex and the City 2 Filming on NYC street

I happened to see the filming of Sex and the City 2 when passing by West Village yesterday. I saw the characters, Carrie and Miranda, from far away. The street where Marc Jacob store is on was blocked for filming the apartment. Lots of people, locals and visitors, were there taking pictures. It was fun.

I love to see beautiful buildings, but I can't say that I know the whole a lot about architecture. For the Guggenheim, I can say I really love its design.

From the exterior, it has a very unique shape. However, the interior is the most important part. An exhibition can be so intriguing when it goes well with the spiral shape of the museum.

For example, the work of the Chinese artist, Cai Guo-Qiang. The instllation of stuffed animals and sculptures of people of the ancient China on the ramp of the museum really gives them movement and makes the whole exhibition vivid. As you walk up to the top, you can see the exploding car.

When an exhibition fits the interior design of the museum, it is impressing. When the human activities match the interior of a building, it is groundbreaking.

In the western architecture, it is the exterior that decides the interior and force the inhabitants to conform their habits. However, for Frank L. Wright, the master who design the Guggenheim, he believes it should be the interior that decides the exterior. Exterior is a pure projection of what is shaped inside.

Recently, 1969 appears a lot in the media.
First of all, it is the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, which took place in upstate New York.
Ang Lee's new film, Taking Woodstock, is coming out. The Gap, which introduces a new collection of jeans, had its first store open in San Francisco.

It was around the Hippie movement. However, one of the concert goers of the Altamont concert in California, hosted by Rolling Stones, was stabbed to death. People say that this incident symbolized the end of the whole Hippie movement, whose concept was peace.

There were so many significant milestones in the human history. I really wish that I could have lived in that year to experience the energy.

One of my biggest interests is to walk around the streets and look for design ideas. When I strolled around Greenwich Village, I found this logo of Kate's Paperie.

I think it is brilliant because the shape and details of the logo make people think of a leaf, which relates "paper" very well. And, "k", the first letter of the name, is successfully incorporated in the logo. It is elegant and communicates well. Lovely!

MAD for the typeface & digital media

I always want to check out the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) since its opening at Columbus Circle last year. I finally made this trip this summer.

Aside its exhibitions, it is famous for the identity re-design done by Pentagram. Michael Bierut designed the logotype, inspired by the environment of the location, a lot of circles and squares. Pentagram calls it the "MAD" typeface.

Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the number of pieces in museums and don't know how to start. However, in MAD, I can just explore the art works on an interactive screen. I feel much easier and I can read the description that helps me understand. No wonder the design won the IDEA Award.

I really like the exhibition of Object Factory: the Art of Industrial Ceramic. I feel amazed to see how the designers play with the ordinary material and create products that are so inspiring and innovative. It will end on Sept. 13. You have to go take a look.

Summer, color, poster

Sometimes there are pretty darn good posters in NY subway stations. Recently, I can't help but attract to the series of posters of MoMA of this summer. I like its use of information graphic to introduce its summer programs. I also like the use of the catchy, contrasty colors.

Its Summer at MoMA website has the same style.

The new identity system of MoMA was designed Pentagram recently. It fits all kinds of platforms: from print advertisement to subway poster to signage to banner.

Taking Woodstock

Ang Lee's new film, "Taking Woodstock" just had a premiere at Cannes. It is based on the true story about how the three-day music festival shaped in 1969. It will be in theaters on August 28.

The festival will celebrate its 40 anniversary in August this year. Bethel Woods Music Festival will star heroes of Woodstock: Levon Helm Band, Jefferson Starship, Ten Years After, Canned Heat, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Mountain, Tom Constanten and Country Joe McDonald.

High Line for High Line?

Soon after High Line opens to public, it becomes a famous hang-out spot. Couples, people on date, family visiting from other state or country and friends can all find their happy moments in this awesome place.

However, the happiest of all would be the restaurants around. People usually grab something to drink and eat to enjoy the beautiful view of High Line. Some of the restaurants, like Friedmans Lunch and Amy's Bread in Chelsea Market, now have special "lunch box" for visitors of High Line. They include a sandwich, cookies(dessert), drink and other few stuff.

After all, it's the hang-out that counts.

going digital- digital ads

When waiting for my friends in Union Square, I have noticed buses displaying digital ads are running around the city. I think it is a great idea. First of all, it fits the needs of modern time-everything goes digital. Second of all, it can display more than one ads on the same display panel, which is more practical. Then, it replaces the traditional paper ads, which saves the use of paper and the cut of trees.

And, this LED display thing makes me think of Esquire's October issue last year. Because of the 75th anniversary, Esquire had a special edition of E-Ink. The words and images can move on the cover (check out the link above and see how cool that is).

I am excited to see where technology is taking us to, but I am also nostalgic about old-school way of doing things.

cup and the city

Lots of people come to NY because they want to see what they used to see in the movies. Snow, central park, empire state building, statue of liberty, brooklyn bridge, a diner place, a walkway, or even a coffee cup.

Yes, this cup has been an icon of new york city for about 30 years. Greek immigrants brought their coffee culture to the city. In 1963, Sherri cup company produced this to-go coffee cup to appeal Greek vendors. The company uses blue and white as they are the colors of Greek flag. Then, the cup is styled with Greek-style letters, patterns and Anthora urns.

Starbucks took NY in 1994. And since then, the city is filled with high-end cups. But, if you want to be nostalgic, sip your coffee through this iconic coffee cup.

Bikes are more and more popular in the city. People who really give a damn about the environment BIKE.

Bikes can be expensive if you consider it a fashion declaration. Urban Outfitters now partners with republic to build costume bikes. Besides, the whole action can be even more expensive if you decide to gear up- outfit plus accessories.

Sigg is a water bottle from Switzerland, favored by people who care about the environment and the bicyclist, of course.

Paper Magazine interviewed Thurston Moore, the lead singer of Sonic Youth. Because of Moore's rich knowledge if underground culture and Kim Gordon's, his wife and band mate, sense for fashion, Sonic Youth has retained its iconic status since 1981.

Paper's David Hershkovits asked this music guru about his opinions about music and life in this interview. The pictures show us that Moore also retains the cool and hip look even though in his 50s.

To see the conversation between the two wise men is such a pleasant thing to do. They are in their age where they can share the most valuable life experiences and knowledge. In the interview Moore said he finally feels like he is post-ambition. He said he just wants to be completely playful with what he does.

Hershkovits then replied him "maybe it takes a lifetime to get to that point."

matt and kim

Because of my music-loving friends, Time Out New York and NYC TV, I recently know two indie bands from NY music scene. One is matt and kim and the other one is the pains of being pure at heart.(I love this name!I mean I really know the pains!)

So, in order to feel the hip vibe of the NY local music scene and embrace the summer, I attended the matt and kim free concert at pier 54.

These two bands have strong styles and so are the crowds. The whole place was packed with the so-called "hipsters." How do I know? Because of the way they dress. Too bad that I didn't bring my camera with me. But, if you want me to put into words, I will say a lot of bright colored dresses and nail colors, like the in-style yellow, hot orange and hot pink, a lot of nerdy eye glasses, gold necklaces whether long or short, vintage bags, belts, oversized shirts and BIKES (examples are below; but it is a lot lively being in there)

Although I am already surrounded by many hipsters, at school and around my neighborhood, I feel I was in a rare fashion event and I enjoyed it. It's good to join this kind of energetic event from time to time to feel the vibe and to see what is out there.
